Went to the vernissage of Bioteknica last night at the FOFA Gallery. It was a very engaging show, with an intelligent and provocative exploration of the lines between ethics, aesthetics, and biotechnology. According to one of the artists, Jennifer Willet, this was the first time the gallery set-up, which featured a laboratory/dissection room (in a back room) that was simulcast into the main gallery via projection, was constructed in this way. I found the idea of projecting their live protocol into the main gallery an interesting distancing mechanism, one that created a tension between the viewers being situated in the same space as the performance while at the same time being able to observe the whole activity of cell harvesting in another room on a projection screen. The effect was that the live protocol that they were undertaking was at once a very real experience, while still creating a seductive aesthetic experience in the main gallery. Check out the Bioteknica website.
