Disastre! This show is an excellent study of why art needs curators ... and a selection committee. This mish-mash of a show threw together everyone's work and the result was confused, bland and immediately forgettable. Good work was cheek by jowl with what can best be described as personal favourites of the assembled artists. It was dire, and made me sad for Concordia's MFA graduate programme ... get a curator - look better!
So, to reset our art balance, we went to see some great work over at the Belgo. And then we went for drinks over at The Keg's new downtowm Montreal location - it was fab!
In celebration of Mathieu doing a fabulous job at his seminar at Concordia, we all went to Kaizen. The sushi was fab - as usual - and Lynn overcame her aversion to crabstick (not pictured). Photos below!
A fun night was had by all. The show didn't have as much polish as the Envers show did earlier in the week, but it was student show, so that is understandable. The outfits were very cool, and the fabrics, not surprisingly (Télio is all about the fabric), were gorgeous! Jill, Ronna, Warren and I enjoyed the cocktails and went to Baldwin afterwards (Baldwin apparently doesn't realize that alcohol should be added to Martinis ... but maybe it's a new thing). Good times!
I believe that this is a design by the designer who won the event ... but I rushed off to the bar before they announced the winners. Anyway, this was my favourite at least ... I believe that I say fabulous 3 times during the video.
Tracey and I had a great time at the Yves Jean Lacasse show. You can see the full collection here. Tracey and I felt like Nina Garcia and Michael Kors sitting next to the runway. The collection did not disappoint - excellent creative vision, exciting and unique tailoring, and hot colours (who would have put a red suit with a red tartan cap - fab!). Some of the mens stuff was a bit overly styled before going down the runway but that is more 'the show' and less the product.
Tonight Jill and I are going to the Télio show, which promises to be a good time as well.

Tania wrote a great letter to the Chronicle Journal a few weeks back and they published it ... with a picture! You go Dr. Tania ... and good luck changing the Bay.
So Alexandra is so smart that she and Mark spend Sunday nights doing the Test The Nation IQ test - but Isabel seems to be winning. Try the IQ test yourself. Thank god for the CBC.
I am so excited! Tomorrow night fancy Tracey and I are going to see the Envers by Yves Jean Lacasse fashion show, and I know that it is going to be fab-glorious. Isabelle, the fashion maven, was our hook-up for this one - thanks lady-bunny! Watch for photos and videos on Wednesday ...
Juan is obviously on the inside track of all things disturbingly weird. You have to go and listen to the track Toute Noir. It is frikking high-larryous! Quelle belle affaire!
I couldn't agree with Perez more! Dragonette will be the sound of the summer. Here is their hot video "I get around" ... slutty and fabulous! Made for summer.
At 9h15, a bit of Martina Sobara (of Dragonette) doing Basement Jaxx is just what the doctor ordered. I love Soviet aesthetics. Makes me think of Cara and Beth ...
I personally feel that this trailer that won the Grindhouse Trailer contest at SXSW would be much improved if it had a bit more of the littlest Hobo in it. But they didn't do quite as much killing on the littlest Hobo. Congrats on winning the Grindhouse Trailer contest!
This video is just too fabulous to pass up! Leslie and the Lys of Goldpants fame rock my world (or at least this Sunday). If there is a god in heaven, someone at Divers Cité will invite them to perform! (PS - thanks to Laurel for the Leslie recommendation)
Both of these video totally work. I know they're old, but it really brings me back, and the simplicity and intelligence of the design just make everything work.
"Le Patron est Devenu Fou!" Great dancing, good track, nostalgic look... hard to believe that this is 10 years old. Ugh.
"Prox Choc" awesome track and the simplicity of the video is disarming. There is great tension, movement and editing ... it just carries the song.
Ohhh Sunday mornings are so nice when you don't have to shovel! Graham is currently in the back yard shoveling out us and our neighbours after our big St. Patrick's day snowfall. He's doing a great job. We made this video just for RJ to inspect the quality of the job.
Went to the vernissage of Bioteknica last night at the FOFA Gallery. It was a very engaging show, with an intelligent and provocative exploration of the lines between ethics, aesthetics, and biotechnology. According to one of the artists, Jennifer Willet, this was the first time the gallery set-up, which featured a laboratory/dissection room (in a back room) that was simulcast into the main gallery via projection, was constructed in this way. I found the idea of projecting their live protocol into the main gallery an interesting distancing mechanism, one that created a tension between the viewers being situated in the same space as the performance while at the same time being able to observe the whole activity of cell harvesting in another room on a projection screen. The effect was that the live protocol that they were undertaking was at once a very real experience, while still creating a seductive aesthetic experience in the main gallery. Check out the Bioteknica website.
